Order of Christian Initiation of Adults (OCIA)

Order of Christian Initiation of Adults (OCIA)

The Order of Christian Initiation of Adults is the special process of discernment and preparation for reception into the Catholic Church. OCIA is the normal way in which adults become full, active, and participating members of the Catholic Church and it includes prayer, reflection, and study of the Catholic faith, its practices, and teachings. Throughout the process, participants will have opportunities to explore how God is acting in their lives and inviting them into an even deeper and more powerful relationship with Him.

The OCIA program is open to all adults who have a sincere desire to explore the Catholic faith. This includes: persons who have never been baptized in the Christian faith and seek to join the community of believers (catechumen).

Those persons who have been baptized in another Christian community but are now seeking to enter into full communion in the Catholic Church (candidate), Catholic adults who were baptized in the Catholic faith, but have never been fully initiated in the sacraments of Confirmation and Holy Eucharist (candidate).

Others who participate in the OCIA process are sponsors for the catechumens and candidates. The sponsors play a very important role in offering support and encouragement through their prayer and example.
