Faith Formation

Whole Family Faith Formation
Grades Pre-K through 6
by Erin Houser
As another school year approaches, so does a new year of Faith Formation at St. John Neumann! We are looking forward to welcoming our families back and beginning another year of learning, prayer, and growing together in our Catholic faith.
Over the past several years, our Faith Formation program has looked a little different from the traditional religious education (or “CCD") many of us remember from childhood. Rather than simply dropping children off for class each week, our program intentionally includes the whole family. Why? Because research and the experience of the Church continue to affirm something incredibly important: parents have a greater influence on the lifelong faith of their children than anyone else.
That doesn't mean parents need to be theologians. It doesn't mean you need to know all the answers to your children's questions, and it certainly doesn't mean you need to be a “perfect Catholic.” It means that the ordinary ways we live our faith at home matter enormously. When children see their parents attend Mass, pray, go to confession, say grace before dinner, talk naturally about God, receive the sacraments, and turn to their faith during both joyful and difficult times, they learn something about Catholicism that cannot be taught from a textbook alone.
Research on the transmission of faith from one generation to the next consistently points to the importance of the home. Children are more likely to carry faith into adulthood when religion is practiced and discussed within their families, rather than only learned in a classroom. The Church has taught this for generations, calling parents the “primary catechists” of their children and the family the domestic church. That is why our program includes you.
Our goal is not to give parents another obligation in an already busy week. Our goal is to come alongside you. Twice each month, our Faith Formation families gather at St. John Neumann. At our first monthly gathering, children meet with their catechists for age-appropriate instruction while parents remain together for adult faith formation. This time is designed to help adults deepen their own understanding of Catholicism, encounter Christ more personally, ask questions, pray, and discover practical ways to bring the faith into everyday family life.
At our second monthly gathering, families remain together for prayer, teaching, conversation, and hands-on activities designed to help parents and children experience and practice the faith together. We believe both pieces matter. Our catechists provide children with the systematic Catholic formation they need. Our parish provides parents with support and formation. Together, we help families carry that faith home.
Perhaps you grew up in a deeply Catholic home. Perhaps you haven't practiced your faith consistently in years. Perhaps there are parts of Catholicism you don't understand, or even struggle with. Perhaps you signed up primarily because you want your child to receive the sacraments. There is a place for you here. You do not have to have everything figured out before you walk through our doors. We simply ask you to come with your children and allow us to walk alongside your family.
Ultimately, Faith Formation is about much more than preparing children to receive First Communion or Confirmation. We want our children to know Jesus. We want them to understand the beautiful faith into which they were baptized. We want them to know where to turn when life becomes difficult, and we want to help them develop a faith that doesn't end when their years of religious education do. That work happens most powerfully when parish, catechists, parents, and children work together.
We are grateful for the opportunity to walk with your family this year and look forward to welcoming everyone back. General registration for the 2026–2027 Faith Formation year closes Friday, August 21. Families who have not yet registered are encouraged to complete their registration by that date. After August 21, general registration will be closed. Families seeking late registration must contact Nate directly at the parish office.
Parents and caregivers, we invite you to lead your family on a journey of faith with Family Faith Formation by clicking the link here: Registration Link. GRIEF SHARES FALL SESSION TO BEGIN ON TUESDAY SEPTEMBER 1ST 10-11:30AM.
This 13-week program is a safe place offering a healthy group experience for anyone grieving the loss of a loved one. This Christ- centered support group program is built around a 3-part design. Each session will show a short 20-30-minute video with valuable insight based on the topic of the week from counselors, pastors and personal stories of people who found healing after a loved one’s death. There would then be a small group discussion with opportunity to talk about information shared in the video and/or any challenges you may be experiencing. There is a workbook that follows the 13-week topics and offers support references for the week between sessions.
Registration is required and a $10 fee is collected during first 3 sessions to offset cost of the $25 workbook that is provided to all participants. Call Tonianne at 717 569-8531x229 to register.
